Marquees can be used in schools to increase socially distanced capacity

Social distancing pubs and restaurants

Marquees in schools are usually for celebrations – but COVID-19 may see a more versatile use of marquee space.

Come September 2020 schools will need every available space to get students back through the doors in line with social distancing guidelines. The two metre rule enables schools to deal with around a third of pupils. Even at one metre they could handle half of their pupils at any one time.

Add to this hand sanitising stations, one-way systems and space for distanced staff rooms and room at school becomes a major issue. Independent schools are already looking at creating such space with a marquee, and state schools could also consider how this could work for them within tight budgets.

Marquees in Devon and Somerset schools

Schools with playground and outside space could use marquees as the solution – from Autumn and through the winter, since efficient heating is now possible as well as good lighting and comfortable spaces. Sections of the marquee can also accommodate opaque or transparent dividers to keep ‘bubbles’ separate and maximise on marquee space.

• Practical semi-permanent space for lessons.
• Overspill space for dining while halls are used for lessons.
• Safe space for recreation.

Marquees can provide valuable extra space in schools

Devon & Somerset Marquees would look to mitigate cost with a longer-term fee arrangement, and there is also talk of Government funding being available where schools lack indoor space.
